Waterproofing Membranes

Waterproofing membranes are crucial for providing a watertight surface for plaza decks, fountains and green spaces covering occupied space. These are also crucial for maintaining a watertight surface for walls that extend below grade, such as basement walls.  These liquid or sheet good materials are installed directly to the concrete surface then covered with a protection mat prior to placing the decorative topside surface or backfilling with soil.

Proper surface preparation, detailing at transitions, and precise compliance with the manufacturer’s instructions are critical to the performance of the system. During construction, quality control of detailing applications can easily be overlooked since these are a small percentage of the overall project. However, this can lead to major problems down the road because, if a failure occurs, it can be very expensive to remove the paving system, sod, soil, shrubbery, etc. to gain access to the membrane. Depending on the severity of the failure, in some cases, the membranes can be repaired, and in other cases, complete removal and replacement is required. Of course, then whatever materials that were covering the membrane must be put back into place.

There are a wide variety of waterproofing membranes on the market, and it is important to select the right one for the specific application at hand. Either contacting a reputable manufacturer of waterproofing products or an experienced contractor with these products is highly recommended to assist in the selection and design process.
