Architectural Wall Coatings
Rain, wind, snow, ultraviolet rays and ineffective detailing over time all take their toll on structures. Exterior deterioration eventually leads to even greater problems if not addressed. Unprotected exteriors and failing joints allow moisture intrusion and a multitude of other concerns, including, but not limited to, facade degradation, mold, and mildew. Protective wall coatings can restore aesthetic appeal and extend the life of a building’s exterior. These are generally the first line of defense in correcting problems and preventing moisture infiltration.
Common surfaces that wall coatings will effectively protect are concrete, cast stone, concrete block, stucco, and EIFS. There is a wide variety of wall coatings available, but the most important quality is breathability. If moisture gets behind the coating, it needs to be able to evaporate through the coating allowing the wall to breathe. If moisture is trapped in the wall behind the coating, this can lead to damage and deterioration.
As with any paint or coating, following the manufacturer’s instructions for surface preparation and application is necessary to achieve maximum adhesion and performance. Most coating manufacturers have a range of standard colors however, most coatings can be tinted to just about any shade if a custom color is desired. Protective wall coatings can be a cost-effective way to beautify your building while adding protection at the same time.
